Marie Louise Egar (Teacher / Artist)

I have had 30 years’ experience as a Classroom/ Visual Arts Teacher in the school system. After completing my teaching studies, majoring in visual arts, and after many years of teaching full time, I immersed myself back into my primary passion-art, painting being my preferred medium. I established Red Gate Art Studio ten years ago and have taught art to young people part time ever since. Over the years and through my studies, I have had experience in painting, drawing, design, printmaking, textiles and ceramics.

I believe that art skills and knowledge are acquired through both explicit teaching and creative thinking.

I believe that students must be given opportunities:

  • To explore skills and techniques
  • To use quality materials for successful art making.
  • To view the artwork of a diverse range of artists, both past and present, and discriminate between different features, characteristics and styles of work made by these artists.
  • To express personal ideas and feelings through visual arts.
  • To select, plan and construct art works using appropriate combination of skills, techniques and processes.
  • To use sources of information beyond personal experience as ‘starting points’ and inspiration.
  • To be exposed to specific art terminology.
  • To explore, take risks, make changes, and experiment with art making.
  • To have time to complete works of art to a level of personal satisfaction.
  • To understand that creating a piece of artwork is a process.
  • To take delight in the creative process of art making.
  • To build confidence and say, “I can do it!”
  • To appreciate that the process of art making involves persistence, risk taking, experimenting, problem solving, flexibility and resilience.
  • To recognise that art making creates challenges, sometimes failures, but more often than not great successes.
  • To develop ways of ‘seeing’ and ‘interpreting’ the world.

As a teacher and an artist, I too continue to build my skill base and develop greater confidence in all areas of visual arts, both through practice, classes and mentoring with peers who share the same commitment to the art learning process.  Learning and gaining knowledge is constant and life-long.  It is important that students who attend art class at Red Gate art studio are exposed to this thinking and know that their challenges are the challenges of us all!
